These two fun fairs, the first celebrating the arrival of spring and the second coinciding with the beginning of autumn, date back to the 14th century. Attracting over three million visitors each year, this three-day festival is one of Europe's largest cultural events. Although these events now pop up each year in many cities, Frankfurt's Christmas market on historic Römerberg Square is one of the oldest and largest in Germany. Frankfurt Airport is located 13 kilometres (8 miles) south-west of the city centre.
Public transport is the best way to get around Frankfurt, although the fares are relatively high.
There are 9 U-Bahn urban rail lines with 86 stations (58 of which are above ground) covering the entire metropolitan area. The network of bus lines also offers very dense coverage and some of them operate at night. To reach cities near Frankfurt, there are also nine S-Bahn suburban rail lines. Rail services generally operate from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.

In Germany, as is also the case in France and Italy, when the service is especially friendly and attentive, leaving a tip is recommended and always appreciated. An appropriate tip in this case is anywhere between 5 and 10 percent of the bill at restaurants or bars. Do not leave the tip on the table. It is better to hand it to the server when paying the bill.
