Three romantic days on the Riviera Maya

With its beach-oriented lifestyle with a Caribbean backdrop and its ancient cities, the Yucatan Peninsula offers you a romantic stay, Mexican-style.

Three romantic days on the Riviera Maya

Day 1: From Cancun to the sandy beaches of the Riviera Maya

On your arrival in Cancun, head south with your loved one, to explore the Riviera Maya, where kilometres of white sandy beaches are fringed by turquoise blue waters. After two hours' travelling, you will approach Tulum.

Check into the Be Tulum hotel, a perfect location for your luxurious adventure. This hotel with its exotic and sophisticated decor merges into a fabulous natural setting, opposite a fine sandy beach. Go together to the spa of this exclusive establishment to try out the treatments used by pre-Hispanic civilisations, with their energising medicinal herbs. Enter the Temazcal, the Mayan equivalent of a sauna intended to purify the body. Reinvigorated, go for a little dip in the idyllic Caribbean Sea before taking part in a yoga class on the hotel rooftop, facing the jungle. In the evening, tranquillity reigns. An enchanted world, where the gentle lapping of the waves will lull you asleep.

Day 2: In search of the Mayan ruins of Tulum

On the following day, wake up early and hop onto a bike to ride to the Mayan ruins. Five kilometres further on, you will arrive at the famous Castillo, an enormous construction dominating the centre of an archaeological site. Wander hand-in-hand amidst these old stones and imagine what old Zamá, the “city of the Dawn”, might have looked like. You will learn that the important city of Cobá (one hour and a half away), used this site as a fishing port.

Amidst the ruins of Tulum, you will discover the temple of the wind god, perched on a cliff looking over the Caribbean, erected to warn neighbouring cities of imminent storms. Before leaving the area, you will not be able to resist the urge to bathe in the cove right next to the site, in a fantastic setting.

After returning to the seaside hotel district, away from the city, another dream setting awaits you at Zamas. In the shade of a thatched beach hut, treat yourself to a 100% traditional lunch right on the sand. Have a taste of tequila and tuck into a white fish ceviche accompanied by guacamole. After this meal, yield to the temptation of an after-lunch siesta, caressed by the trade winds. Your love nest is just a five hundred metre stroll back along the beach.

To continue your evening, head for Gitano Tulum, a trendy bar whose jungle-style atmosphere will amaze you. During a romantic evening lit by Chinese lanterns, surrender to the charms of “the wild child”, a delicious cocktail made from mezcal, guava and lime.

Three romantic days on the Riviera Maya

Day 3: Explore the heart of a jungle swarming with life

Devote your last day in this idyllic region of Mexico to explore the nature reserve of Sian Ka'an. For a unique moment of tranquillity, rent a boat for the two of you. With your hair blowing in the wind, make your way at top speed towards a strip of land crossed by lagoons, mangrove swamps and virgin jungle. The contrast between the seaside resorts of the Riviera Maya and this unspoiled nature is striking. Your boat will push gently into the mangrove swamp, where egrets fly away at the approach of a crocodile. You and your dear one are bound to be impressed by the diversity of animal and plant life.

For your meal, share a plate of grilled avocados accompanied by pumpkin seeds at Arca, a gourmet restaurant which is famous in Mexico. Then don some goggles with a snorkel and dive into the transparent waters of Blanquizal, a natural aquarium populated with tropical fish. Later, regain dry land, with starfish as far as the eye can see, for a pleasant return to Cancun.
