The Rio Carnival

The Rio Carnival

Every February in Rio, carnival takes over!

Is there a city that better symbolizes carnival in all its excess than Rio de Janeiro? For several days and nights, the cariocas and passing visitors celebrate dance and festivities to the sound of samba, mambo, and forró. The parade of the samba schools—a deluge of colours and glitter—in the Sambódromo, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, is a great moment of popular communion and a symbol of the Rio carnival. But elsewhere, in all the streets of Rio, the party is also in full swing, led by the bandas (district orchestras). It's an experience to live intensely, or not at all!
