Like the Bolshoi in Moscow, the Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg has a reputation for producing great performances. In Russia, dance is a tradition that dates back to the 18th century, when the first imperial ballet school was created. Legendary dancers like Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov trained in the city before choosing freedom.
During your stay, don't miss (if the company is not on tour, which happens regularly) an evening ballet performance at the Mariinsky, among the most spectacular the world over. Built in 1860, the theatre is truly superb. Especially admirable are its columns, painted ceiling, stage curtain, and stunning lobby, with its beautiful pilasters and bas-reliefs. Opera is the other big draw; it was here that The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky was presented for the first time, in 1890.
