Believing that the seventh art has much to contribute to democratic debate and the understanding of social issues, a handful of enthusiasts launched the Festival de Cine Global Dominicano in 2006. All the major cities of the island support this great cultural event, organising open evenings and screenings of feature films and documentaries from the Americas and around the world. The festival's motto is ‘Global Issues, Personal Stories' and the capital Santo Domingo rolls out the red carpet for movie buffs in eight locations, including the Cinemateca Dominicana and the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito.
