Szimpla Kert, iconic ruin bar

As the first romkért (ruin bar) of Budapest in the old Jewish neighbourhood, Szimpla Kert is an institution governed by alternative cultures.

Opened in 2002 in one of these deserted buildings of the old Jewish neighbourhood, Szimpla Kert launched the “ruin bar” trend and is now an emblem of Budapest. It originated from the underground culture that wished to avoid destruction of run-down historical buildings. Nowadays, Szimpla Kert shelters a dozen bars and small restaurants over the two floors of the building. Wander from room to room and explore their varying universes, even though they share the same alternative mindset, only arranged with salvaged elements, like fishnets and barbershop chairs. It will undoubtedly be the only place where you can experience pre-dinner drinks in a bathtub or an old Trabant, the famous East-German car! More than a night time meeting spot, Szimpla Kert hosts events such as concerts, flea markets and outdoor film screenings. Come back on Sunday morning and discover a totally different atmosphere at the farm market, open to all.
