Sidi El Houari, Oran's heart

Sidi El Houari, Oran's heart

Sidi El Houari was a Muslim saint. The famous old quarter of the city, equivalent of the casbah, was named after him.

Sidi El Houari is a symbol of Oran, its heart and first city centre, located between the Murdjadjo mountain – also known as Aïdour – and the old harbour. Some of the old Spanish houses date back to the 16th century. Do not miss an afternoon walk there and go through the old Saint-Louis high school, boulevard de Stalingrad and finally the Hassan Basha Mosque.
Long neglected, Sidi El Haouri has become part of the safeguarded sectors of the city in 2015. An old French hospital was the first building to be recently restored, as baths from the roman era were discovered in its midst. For now, restoration works are being supervised by local charities, which lack funding and still cannot renovate the popular houses of the quarter on a bigger scale.
