Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art: high profile exhibitions

Attached to the Museum of Fine Arts, the MAC is located in a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, topped by a monumental glass dome.

This museum showcases artists from Chile and around the world from the 19th century to today. The main collections house almost 2,600 works of art, including sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics, and more than 600 paintings. Most of the works were bequeathed to the museum by Chilean artists and foreign artists with an address in Chile.

The MAC makes it possible to explore the pictorial universe of Latin American painters such as Roberto Matta and Pablo Burchard, Emilio Pettoruti, Alejandro Obregón, and Fernando Szyszlo. The eclectic collection of bronze and stone sculptures is very moving, and its centrepiece, a bronze signed by Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American sculptor, is very highly acclaimed.

A must-see before leaving is the international collection of lithographs, sketches, and engravings, among which are works by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the renowned Austrian author, painter, and engraver.
