PARIS FASHION WEEK: HAUTE COUTURE HOT SPOTS

Spring-Summer 2017 collections will be on the runways at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week from 22 to 26 January. Here is our selection of the capital's fashion hot spots.

For five days, displays and showrooms will take turns, with nearly 100 fashion shows taking over different venues in Paris, which are kept a secret until the last minute. This particular week is also an opportunity to approach some fashion divas. The microcosm of writers, press attachés, designers, muses and models gather away from the runways for some very lively lunches and evenings. Here is a review of places where to catch a glimpse of them.

Sparkle at the Ritz

More elegant than ever, the mythical Parisian palace is resolutely forward-looking. Magnificently renovated, this epitome of French luxury has a dazzling future ahead of it and is sought out more than ever before by the major names of the fashion scene, who feel at home there. That is the meaning of real luxury! Depending on the time, start with a coffee and croissant or a typically French chicken, mayonnaise and tarragon croustillant at the Ritz Bar, then move to the Chanel Spa, dine at the Espadon restaurant and spend the evening in Bar Hemingway. Colin Field will introduce you to his latest creation, Margarita with lemon salt.

Talk fashion at Divellec

This fish restaurant was the meeting place of those in power for several decades. It was where Parisian politicians came to dine. After three years of closure for renovation, it has re-opened. Mathieu Pacaud, son of Bertrand Pacaud from the Ambroisie, is its brilliant chef, and it's the place to be. If you're coming from Dallas, New York or Seoul, make sure to book in advance for lunch or dinner. A great lady of American fashion recently kicked off her come-back here by organising a dinner on the occasion of the French publication of her autobiography.

See and be seen at Chez Loulou

In the heart of the Louvre palace, with a majestic view onto the gardens, Chez Loulou is the restaurant of the Decorative Arts Museum. Close to the Cour Carrée, which is the historical stage for fashion shows, and to the Carrousel, it is the headquarters of writers, stylists and buyers. They come here at any time of the day for a drink, an Italian snack or again for a last drink after dinner. It has a bistro-brasserie feel, revisited by fashion influencers. Don't be put off by their sometimes eccentric demeanour. Enjoy the atmosphere, which is similar to that in the film Ready to Wear by Robert Altman…

Russian canteen

Above the boutique is a wood-panelled room in the style of a tea salon. The atmosphere is cosy and very warm. There is something of Anna Karenina in the air… This is one of the most popular addresses in the fashion world, and indeed in Paris. Welcome to Caviar Kaspia. It is also one of the most intimate addresses. Nobody comes here to show off or to get themselves noticed. They come instead for the sheer enjoyment, the luxury of sharing a king crab salad, a caviar potato or smoked salmon with blini, washed down with Polish vodka or a glass of Sancerre. Years go by, but nothing changes...the menu and the service are the same. This timelessness is appreciated by all those who make and remake the world every season.

Luxury, calm and extravagance at Hotel Costes

Anyone who thinks that fashionable venues always go out of fashion is wrong. This hotel has been the symbol of Parisian life for two decades. The décor by Jacques Garcia, with oriental paintings, garnet-coloured velvet, panelling and tasselled armchairs, is just as famous as its clientèle. Celebrities come here because they feel like in another dimension. Everything is imbued with a sense of the unreal. To get from the salon to the Italian patio, you have to go through a long, scented corridor, like a rite of passage. As for the cuisine, it has introduced new classics, like the lightly-seared tartar with herbs.

Dip into Les Bains

The legendary nightclub reopened last year. Just like before, only better. The club has kept its original white tiles and on the dance floor some of the most beautiful models on the planet get into the rhythm. When tiredness gets the better of them at dawn, they can now go upstairs to their room. Les Bains is now open 24/7: a bar, a club, a restaurant and a hotel at once. It introduces a lifestyle which has to be experienced, even if just for a coffee.

The Japanese wave

It was fashion writers who gave Paris the taste of green tea and sushi. This is how Japanese cuisine managed to leave the restricted 2nd arrondissement, where rue Saint-Anne is the most Japanese street in Paris. They can all be found in Kinogawa Vendôme or Kinogawa Matignon, where the menu offers all you need to stay in shape. Seaweed salad, sea bass sashimi, tuna caviar tartar, yellow tail carpaccio and, especially, the famous grilled black cod, marinated in miso sauce.

Night-time at Castel

The chic club on the left bank, it is both a restaurant and night club. Once inside, you'll notice the fresco painted by fashion illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme. It spotlights earlier celebrities of the venue in the1960-1970s, as well as new famous groupies. The chequered table cloths are covered with oysters, eggs with truffle and green beans with lobster. Fashion addicts teeter in stiletto heels over a carpet with "sensual" motifs to the dance floor, talking about fashion shows, style, look, castings, etc. It's just the norm at Castel.
