Muizenberg, or the call of the sea

For lying about in the sun, diving into the ocean, or catching a wave, the Muizenberg beach is the best option.

Muizenberg, lined by colourful Victorian beach cabins, contains one of the longest beaches near Cape Town and has been a destination for generations of beachgoers.

For many, surfing in South Africa started here. A legendary beach, the waves are suitable for beginners, and surf schools have multiplied. One of the first, Gary's Surf School, teaches introductory classes right on the main beach, called 'Surfer's Corner', where the smoothed-out waves won't scare the novices. More advanced surfers may head to Kalk Bay, Longbeach, Scarborough, Dungeons, or the aptly named Dangers Beach. Keep your eyes open for the Great White Sharks, however.

At Muizenberg a net is generally in use to keep them away, but the Shark Spotters, a world first, are also watching the coast. If you see a red flag, it means there is a high danger of sharks, while a white flag means that one has been spotted.
