In harmony with nature at Parque Ecológico do Cocó

A few steps away from the bustling city centre, take a break at Fortaleza's most popular park, actively fighting to save endangered species.

Less than seven kilometres from the sea, “Cocó Park” is one of the largest parks in South America. Opened in 1989, it is a giant oasis of greenery in the very heart of the city. With a total surface area of nearly 1,100 hectares, the green lung of Fortaleza is home to a gigantic mangrove, this tropical marine marsh ecosystem that produces a lot of biomass. Many plant and animal species flourish here: molluscs, crustaceans, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, some of which are endangered.
The behaviours of some of the park fauna are studied by scientists to understand why they are endangered. The trees found here are also an effective means of combating pollution in this urban environment. Enjoy an eco-friendly boat trip along the Rio Cocó: you can admire the flora and fauna that populate the environs.
