Though the origin of puppet theatre on water dates back almost a thousand years in the North Delta, Ho Chi Minh City in the south, also has its own theatre, the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre. This show has the reputation of being as good as the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. The professional orchestra plays only traditional musical instruments: wooden flutes (sao), gongs (cong), drum (trong com), bamboo xylophones, and the dan bau, a striking instrument with one string whose body is cut from the dried bark of a Chinese cucumber, the bau.
Thanks to the skills of the puppeteers—immersed to the waist and hidden behind the back of the set—and skilful lighting effects that make the long canes animating the dolls completely invisible, the show, which lasts about 50 minutes, will seduce you with its poetry, humour, and splendid visual and pyrotechnical effects.
