Colada Shop, Havana in the heart of Washington

Inspired by Cuban canteens, Colada Shop is a hybrid place, between a bar and a café, where regulars pair daiquiris and empanadas before dinner.

Its turquoise blue facade stands out amid Washington's grey buildings, and its singularity proves attractive. Inside Colada Shop, honeycombed tiles share wall space with a fresco depicting a Cuban woman. At lunchtime, high chairs and bar stools are taken by storm for lunch, consisting of some Havana-inspired snacks. For dinner, the bar is very popular with its Cuban music, cocktails, tapas and, most importantly its rooftop that comes alive when the sun sets in. Bedecked with yellow chairs leaning against a red brick wall, the colourful rooftop is a hotspot for happy hour adepts. Take a look at mixologist Juan Coronado's short cocktail selection and try – in moderation – the traditional recipe of the daiquiri. Or indulge in one of his signature drinks, like the Hotel Nacional, a subtle mix of white and dark rums, apricot liquor and purée and fresh pineapple juice. With the extra help of a few empanadas and croquetas, you will feel right at Havana.
