Bologna's film library: as archives go by

For film lovers, the film library is a true goldmine with screenings of rare movies and documentaries, as well as a sophisticated and demanding programming.

Born 50 years ago under the then-mayor's patronage, this Bolognese cultural hotspot pays tribute to the 7th art in all shapes and forms. You can browse this impressive film collection of worldwide heritage, where thousands of film reels are treasured. From silent cinema greats like Chaplin to independent movies and documentaries, they are all being restored by the Cineteca di Bologna.

Digital transition now being a necessity to keep those gems alive, each year thousands of works are being scanned within these walls and then screened in the two integrated theatres on site. The Scorsese screening room is devoted to old classics and unknown masterpieces while the Mastroianni one is selected for independent foreign subtitled movies. Furthermore, the Cineteca programs several events along the year. Just ask for the program!
