Alici, the open sea in a plate

Thousands of miles away from Italy, a piece of the Amalfi Coast took up residence in Dubai, bringing its gastronomic heritage along.

With oil paintings and old Italian postcards on display everywhere, small white and blue bowls of olives at the centre of each table and lemon trees in the dining room, everything would lead you to believe that Alici is one of those typical seaside restaurants of the Amalfi Coast, in the South of Italy. And yet, it is not the Tyrrhenian Sea but the Dubai Marina that spreads before your eyes. On Bluewaters Island, the establishment offers Italian gastronomy, mainly based on fish and seafood. Start with arancini al ragù di mare, Sicilian rice and tomato deep fried balls, stuffed here with seafood stew. Carry on with oven-cooked halibut served with scallops, mussels and a Mediterranean fish stew. Comes dessert, indulge in a torta caprese, a chocolate cake with white chocolate cream, to enjoy on the terrace facing Dubai's skyline.
